What Lens Desktop is
Lens Desktop is the best-known graphical Kubernetes client, with a mature extension ecosystem and commercial support behind it, and it is still moving quickly — 2026 releases added an Argo CD dashboard and a Cost Monitor. It is worth being precise about what it is today, because it changed: the open source version was retired, and the product now requires an account and — above a revenue threshold — a paid subscription for everyone who uses it.

Be honest
When Lens Desktop is the better choice.
Choose Lens when you need its extension ecosystem, when you want Helm upgrades and rollbacks or Argo CD syncs run from the window rather than handed to your shell, when you want spend shown beside the cluster — PodSteer has no cost view at all — or when a support contract and a vendor to call are worth more than a licence you keep. It is a mature product with years of work in it, and PodSteer has no extension API: if your workflow depends on one, that is the end of the comparison.
The other way round
When PodSteer fits.
PodSteer fits when the account, the threshold or the licence are the problem. Apache-2.0 is a grant you keep rather than a tier you can age out of by growing, there is nothing to sign in to, and there is no usage tracking to opt out of. The GitOps views, the security reports and the MCP server Lens sells in its paid tiers are all in the free application here. It also assesses rather than displays: it opens on what is wrong, ranked, which is a different job from the one a dashboard does.

Is there a free alternative to Lens?
Yes. PodSteer is Apache-2.0, needs no account, and has no revenue threshold and no paid tier of the client. Freelens, the MIT-licensed fork of the old open-source Lens, is another; Headlamp and k9s are free too, in different shapes.
Does PodSteer need a Lens ID or any other account?
No. It reads your kubeconfig and has nothing to sign in to. It sends no telemetry; its one call beyond your clusters is a daily check against GitHub for a newer release, which sends no identifier and can be switched off.
Which of Lens's paid features does PodSteer include for free?
Argo CD and Flux views, Trivy Operator security reports and an MCP server for coding agents are all in the free application. Two differences are worth knowing: PodSteer shows Argo CD state but does not sync, and it has nothing like Lens's Cost Monitor.
