Comparison
PodSteer vs Aptakube
A polished commercial desktop client for Kubernetes.
What Aptakube is
Aptakube is a paid, closed-source desktop Kubernetes client for macOS, Windows and Linux, and it is the closest thing here to what PodSteer is: a native-feeling window on your own machine, nothing installed in the cluster, multiple clusters side by side. It is well made, it ships often, and its authors charge for it, which is a legitimate way to build software and worth saying plainly.
Side by side
The differences that matter.
| Aspect | Aptakube | PodSteer |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Closed source | Apache-2.0 |
| Price | £6/month personal, £4/seat/month team; 15-day trial, no free tier | Free |
| Devices | Two on the personal plan, one per user on team | No limit — there is nothing to license |
| Account | A subscription | None |
| Several clusters at once | Yes, side by side | Yes, in tabs, plus an All-clusters view |
| Installed in the cluster | Nothing | Nothing |
| Platforms and packages | macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows 10 and later on x64, and Linux as a .deb, an .rpm or an AppImage | macOS: a signed, notarised universal .dmg and .zip, and a Homebrew cask. Linux (amd64, arm64): AppImage, .deb, .rpm and .zip. Windows (amd64): an installer and a .zip, not code-signed, so SmartScreen warns on first launch |
| Logs | Level filtering from structured parsing, a volume histogram and multi-pod logs (1.21, September 2026) | Level filters, a volume histogram, and one stream across every pod of an application |
| Air-gapped | Runs against private clusters; licensing is a hosted service | No telemetry and no licence check; its one call beyond your clusters, a daily update check, turns off with one switch |
| When metrics are missing | Usage where the metrics API answers | The denominator is named, and an unmeasured figure says so rather than reading as zero |

Be honest
When Aptakube is the better choice.
Choose Aptakube if you want a mature, supported product with somebody to email, and you would rather pay six pounds a month than be somebody's early user. It has been shipping longer, its multi-cluster views are more complete than PodSteer's, and paying for software you use every day is a reasonable thing to do.
The other way round
When PodSteer fits.
PodSteer fits when the licence matters — no subscription, no seat count, no device limit, no account, and source you can read before you trust it with a production kubeconfig — or when the machine cannot reach a licensing service at all. The assessment is also a different shape: PodSteer opens on what is wrong and why, ranked, rather than on a list to browse.
Questions
What people ask about this comparison.
Is there a free alternative to Aptakube?
PodSteer is free and Apache-2.0, with no account, seat count or device limit. It is younger than Aptakube and its multi-cluster views are less complete, so the trial is worth taking if you are weighing the two.
Does PodSteer work where a licence server cannot be reached?
Yes. It has no licence check and sends no telemetry. Its one call beyond your clusters is a daily update check, which turns off in Settings or with PODSTEER_UPDATE_CHECK=false.
